Washington D.C. - In honor of the Global Leaders Internship and Fellowship Program, the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) would like to recognize its 2013 program participants. These students represent the diversity and advancement CHLI strives to promote. These remarkable individuals have excelled in their communities and schools. Their passion has driven them to become a part of a great organization such as CHLI. We thank you for your passion, and dedication to our community and for being an ambassador of our organization. Congratulations Perla!
Perla Salazar is an honor graduate from Edcouch-Elsa High School from Elsa, Texas and most recently a graduate of The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA). As a first generation Mexican-American, she received her Bachelor's in Business Administration in Management, with a focus in Human Resources and a Minor in Music.
From a young age, Perla started taking part in community and school activities that impacted others along the way, including mentoring children and devoting community service hours for school events. During her time at UTPA she remained involved in programs like The University Program Board, Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) among others. In addition, she has also taken part in the drum corps activity that helped shape her into the leader she is today by gaining values that will help her succeed in her career.
Perla has also had the opportunity to serve as a college program intern with Walt Disney World Resorts in Orlando, Florida. Representing her university in this internship allowed her to gain experience as an entrepreneur, while making world-wide connections and friendships. She has also had opportunities to teach young adults in the marching arts by being contracted to work for high schools in the past as a color guard consultant.
This fall, Perla proudly serves as a Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute Global Leaders Fellow in Washington, D.C. and has been given the opportunity to work for Congressman Henry Cuellar and Baxter Pharmaceuticals.
Perla's participation in CHLI's program is possible thanks to the contribution of Altria.
"Altria is proud to sponsor such a magnificent opportunity," said John Hoel, Altria's Director of Federal Government Affairs, and CHLI Board Member. "Altria strongly supports opportunities for empowerment, leadership development and the access to higher learning opportunities in the Hispanic Community. CHLI's internship programs are an investment in the next generation of leaders and provide an outstanding experience for these young students. Over the past ten years CHLI has continuously provided learning opportunities for young Hispanics, and we are proud support them."
