CHLI Executive Director Nominated for Prestigious National Hispanic Leadership Award

Washington, DC – The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute's Executive Director, Mr. Octavio A. Hinojosa Mier, has been nominated for the prestigious 2008 "Lider" of the Year Award, sponsored by MillerCoors.

Hinojosa Mier is one of thirteen national Hispanic leaders who have been nominated. The 2008 "Lider" of the Year is selected by the number of online votes received between November 1 and November 12, 2008 at

"CHLI is honored to have its Executive Director nominated as the 2008 'Lider' of the Year Award," said US Representative Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL-21), Chairman, CHLI Board of Directors and CHLI Founder. "Octavio is the perfect example of a national Hispanic leader who has worked hard and achieved success. His parents migrated to the US from Mexico, where he then grew up in the small town of Hutchison, KS and now leads a major Hispanic non-profit organization focused on empowering our community and creating stronger Hispanic leaders in government, business and civic life. I can't think of a better 'Lider'."

Should Hinojosa Mier be selected for this honor, the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute will be awarded a grant for $25,000 by Miller Coors. CHLI would use this grant to fund an innovative leadership initiative for promising Hispanics in communities such as Denver, Los Angeles and Albuquerque.

Hinojosa Mier wasnamed theExecutive Director by the Board of Directors ofthe Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute when it was founded in 2004. Throughout the pastfour years, under Hinojosa Mier's leadership, the organization has grown in stature and expanded its programming and funding.

A native of Hutchinson, Kansas and the son of Mexican immigrants, Hinojosa Mier holds a Master's of Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and a Bachelor's of Arts in Political Science and Latin American Studies from the University of Kansas. He and his wife, Gina, and his baby daughter, Alexa, live in Virginia.
