WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 21, 2015) - The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI), together with Florida International University (FIU), announced a commitment to increase internship placements, provide alumni mentors, quality programming and support services for both FIU and CHLI interns.
This unique partnership further deepens a strong history of collaboration between the nation's largest Hispanic-serving university and the premier organization founded by Members of Congress to advance the Hispanic Community's Economic Progress with a focus on Social Responsibility and Global Competitiveness.
"We are honored by this commitment from CHLI to expand opportunities for FIU students to launch their careers in our nation's capital. This will greatly enhance our work, especially with corporate partners, to increase internships in policy and the STEM sectors for our students," said Kenneth G. Furton, FIU Provost.
The partnership launched at the 11th Annual CHLI Gala and Leadership Awards in Washington, D.C., where FIU was honored on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the University's founding and as a long-term supporter of CHLI programming.
"FIU is a key partner for CHLI. Every day, CHLI's relationship with FIU deepens, allowing a greater number of students to benefit from our relationship. CHLI is deeply grateful to the leadership of FIU for the opportunity to help students become leaders of tomorrow," said CHLI Chairman and former Member of Congress, Lincoln Diaz-Balart.
Through this mutual commitment, FIU and CHLI will focus on offering FIU Honors College students support in their pursuit of corporate and congressional internship opportunities, and further expand the CHLI Internship Program by pursuing private corporate support collaboratively. Additionally, the initiative will offer exclusive opportunities in the Washington, D.C. area, and will aim to cultivate and engage both the FIU and CHLI alumni network for identification of mentors and internship sponsors.
