Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox Headlines
CHLI Future Leaders Conference in San Antonio, TX
Panelists and University Students Discuss Hot Topic of US-Mexico Relations
San Antonio, TX – More than 300 university students, young professionals and community leaders from the Greater San Antonio area gathered together on Friday, March 27, 2009 for the CHLI Future Leaders Conference, hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Business and organized by the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI).
The conference featured Former President of Mexico, Vicente Fox, who effectively addressed the conference theme, "The Emerging Role of Future Hispanic Leaders in US-Mexico Relations,” as well as touching on issues of trade, drug cartels, and border security.
"We are friends, neighbors and partners along what maybe the most dynamic border in the world,” said Former President Fox, of the United States and Mexico. "There is much more to work on then simply the issues of drugs and related violence. Both nations share the ‘American Dream' of freedom and opportunity; we are partners in building a future of understanding, economic growth and a better life for our citizens.”
In addition to the special luncheon with keynote speaker, Vicente Fox, the CHLI Future Leaders Conference held two panel-led discussions, "Promoting Bilateral Economic Development: How the current economic environment affects you and your future job opportunities” and "Bilateral Public Policies and How They Affect Your Education, Environment, Security and Immigration.”
"This was by far our most successful CHLI Future Leaders Conference. We are thrilled to see the excitement of the students and the involvement and support from the local community,” said Octavio A. Hinojosa Mier, CHLI Executive Director. "We are grateful to the University of Texas at San Antonio for hosting us and to President Fox for sharing his unique insight and vision for the future of US-Mexico Relations and the important role that young Hispanic leaders will play.”
Panelists included many prominent local, state, national and international leaders, including Texas Secretary of State Esperanza "Hope” Andrade; Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28); Ramiro A. Cavazos, President & CEO, San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and Guillermo Ordorica Robles, Deputy Director General for the United States, Mexican Secretariat for External Relations (SRE); among others.
"I am delighted to have the CHLI Future Leaders Conference held for the first time in south Texas,” said Congressman Henry Cuellar, a CHLI Board Member. "I applaud the efforts of CHLI and UTSA to encourage our young Hispanic leaders to become an integral part of enhancing US-Mexico Relations.”
The students found the conference very applicable to today's issues.
"The CHLI Future Leaders Conference was very targeted at us, as Hispanic students and/or students interested in Latin America,” said Ryanne Vela, student moderator and Junior at UTSA. "The panelists are leaders in our community who spoke candidly about US-Mexico relations, including security, border access, education and cooperation, and how we as student leaders can get involved. I could tell the students enjoyed the presentations and could take back valuable information that applies to their lives and classes.”
The one-day event, which was free to everyone, was sponsored by University of Texas at San Antonio College of Business, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Dell, Inc., and Official Media Partner, Univision Channel 41 San Antonio.
