Washington, DC – United States Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey will receive the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute's 2009 Leadership in Public Service Award, to be presented at its 5th Annual CHLI Gala Dinner on Wednesday May 13, 2009.
Senator Menendez was selected by the CHLI Board of Directors to receive this distinct honor because of his impressive career in public service and his leadership in both the United States Senate and the House of Representatives.
The CHLI Leadership in Public Service Award was established to recognize leaders who provide exemplary leadership in public life on behalf of the U.S. Hispanic community.
"CHLI is honored to present the 2009 Leadership in Public Service Award to Senator Bob Menendez,” said Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL-21), CHLI Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors. "Senator Menendez serves as a role model for all Hispanics. His effectiveness in Congress, rooted in his great talent and courage, is extraordinary.”
Senator Menendez was appointed to the U.S. Senate by New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine in 2006 and then popularly elected later that same year. Prior to serving in the U.S. Senate, Mr. Menendez was elected by his colleagues in 2002 as the Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.
"I am extremely honored by this leadership award from CHLI, an organization that dedicates itself to advancing the diversity of thought and enhancing the public dialogue around issues of importance to the U.S. Hispanic community,” said U.S. Senator Menendez. "I gladly accept this distinct honor on behalf of the U.S. Hispanic community and especially the vibrant and diverse Hispanic community in my home state of New Jersey.”
Senator Menendez currently serves on the Senate Committees on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Energy and Natural Resources; Budget; Finance; and Foreign Relations. He is the Chairman of the Housing, Transportation, and Community Development Subcommittee and
