Washington, D.C. – The Congressional
Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) will soon hold its Third Annual CHLI
Future Leaders Conference, which will focus on the current economic and
political challenges facing the Western Hemisphere today. This very timely
half-day conference, titled, Democracy in the Americas: Challenges and
Opportunities for the Leaders of Tomorrow, will be held Friday, July 17,
2009 from 8:30am – 2:00pm at the Congressional Auditorium of the Capitol
Visitors Center, U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Corporate partners include Comcast Corporation,
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., MillerCoors Lideres, and Univision Communications, Inc.
A diverse panel of experts from
Argentina, Mexico, Spain, and the U.S. will come together for two informative
and thought-provoking panels: The Emerging Role of the Millennial Generation
in the Economic Integration of the Americas; and Democracy in the
Americas: New Directions in the 21st Century. The half-day
conference will be followed by a networking lunch at the Capitol Visitor Center
cafeteria.
“The CHLI Future Leaders Conference
is our premier annual event that brings together a growing level of interest
from student leaders, policy makers and corporate supporters,” said Octavio A.
Hinojosa Mier, CHLI Executive Director. “This year, the topic of
Democracy in Latin America is very timely given the current challenges of free
and fair elections, rule of law and legitimacy. Our goal through the CHLI
Future Leaders Conference is to actively engage emerging young leaders from
diverse backgrounds in the future economic and political relations within the
Americas.”
The CHLI Future Leaders Conference
is a free annual conference that brings together summer interns, young
professionals and policy makers for an opportunity to share viewpoints and
offer solutions to the challenges facing the region today, as well as to
network with local, national and international leaders in the public, private
and non-profit sectors.
First held in 2007 at the
Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, D.C., CHLI has also hosted this
important conference series nationally. Most recently, the CHLI Future Leaders
Conference was held in San Antonio, Texas in March 2009 featuring former
President of Mexico, Vicente Fox, as the keynote speaker on the role of
emerging young leaders in U.S.-Mexico relations.
"Presently, the spotlight in foreign affairs is the
situation in Honduras concerning which government will remain in power to
further democracy in the country and in Latin America,” said Romy Portuondo
Remior, from Miami, FL currently interning with the office of Congressman Mario
Diaz-Balart. “The [CHLI Future Leaders] Conference is a perfect
opportunity to learn more about the types of issues facing current leaders and
how we, as future leaders with an interest and concern for the diverse countries
and peoples of Latin America, will be able to make an impact."

Mr. Hector Romero, Director of Financial Analysis, Grupo Salinas (Mexico); The
Honorable Roger Noriega, Visiting Fellow, American Enterprise Institute (AEI);
and The Honorable Esteban Bullrich, Argentina Chamber of Deputies; CHLI Board
Member Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28), U.S. House of Representatives;
Congressman Mike Pence (IN-6),Chairman of the House Republican
Conference, among other prominent leaders and experts in Latin American
history, politics and affairs.
The conference is free for all
