on October 8, Cunard Vice President of
Caribbean and Atlantic Shore Operations, Steve Nielsen, presented a charitable donation to the CHLI
Board of Directors. Special guests attending the luncheon included: CHLI Chairman, the Honorable
Lincoln Diaz-Balart, CHLI and CICF Board members, cruise industry executives, as well as business and
community leaders.
“We are excited to continue our partnership with CHLI to promote educational and leadership activities
among Hispanic Americans” said James R. Border, Chairman of the Cruise Industry Charitable
Foundation. “New York is a rapidly growing port for the cruise lines. As our industry expands its
presence here, we will continue to support charitable programs designed to promote enhanced educational
opportunities for youth.”
“We appreciate the generous support and leadership of the Cruise Industry Charitable Foundation. CICF
understands the importance of increasing educational opportunities for the Hispanic American community.
Through this grant, CICF is helping Hispanic American youth achieve their goals,” said Representative
Lincoln Diaz-Balart, CHLI Chairman.
New York is the third-ranked state in the nation benefiting from cruise industry activity. In 2004, cruise
lines generated over $1.4 billion in expenditures and provided 21,321 jobs in the local community. Last
year, over 500,000 passengers embarked on a cruise vacation from the New York Cruise Terminal on
Manhattan’s West Side, representing a 25 percent increase over 2003.
