CHLI Announces 2007 Board of Directors

Cesar Conde, Vice-President, Operating Manager of Galavision joins board
WASHINGTON, DC - The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) announces its 2007 Board of Directors. Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL-21), Senior Member of the House Rules Committee and Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process, was reelected as Chairman of CHLI. Rep. Diaz-Balart chairs a nineteen-member board committed to creating a broader awareness of diversity of thought, views and interests within the Hispanic and Portuguese American communities.
CHLI also welcomes Cesar Conde, Vice President Operating Manager of Galavision, as its newest member to the board. Mr. Conde replaces Jorge Plasencia to serve as Univision's representative on CHLI's Board. "We appreciate Jorge Plasencia's year's of service to the organization," said Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, "We look forward to Cesar Conde on achieving CHLI's goals."
CHLI is a non-for-profit and non-partisan organization that provides programs and initiatives to serve the Hispanic and Portuguese American communities. This year's talented officers include: Vice-Chairwoman Ms. Raquel "Rocky" Egusquiza from Ford Motor Company, Treasurer Eduardo J. Negron-Mendez from Popular, Inc., and Secretary Bert Gomez from R.J. Reynolds. Together these individuals aim to build stronger partnerships between CHLI and the business community.
During its recent annual board meeting, the Board of Directors also discussed CHLI's accomplishments and its growing list of new programs and initiatives. "We share in CHLI's successes as it continues to grow as an organization," stated Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart, "Since its founding in 2003, CHLI is committed to providing more opportunities to Hispanics and serve as an alternative voice for the U.S. Hispanic community on important issues."
CHLI's intiatives and accomplishments include:
  • The Ford Motor Company CHLI Leadership Program -- A highly competitive summer Congressional internship program, which is now in its fourth year, offers undergraduate students of Hispanic and Portuguese descent an opportunitiy to participate in a six-week internship program in Washington, D.C., consisting of first-hand experience in the federal public policy field and interaction with top policy makers and appointed officials.
  • CHLI Congressional Briefings Series -- CHLI has partnered with the Altria Group to host a series of congressinal briefings on important public policy issues affecting the Hispanic community. At lasy year's briefings, top government officials and experts discussed issues such as immigration reform policy as well as United States and Latin American policy. CHLI and the Altria Group plan to continue hosting these successful congressional briefings in 2007.
  • CHLI, Freddie Mac Financial Literacy Workshops -- CHLI is working with Freddie Mac to offer financial education workshops to university students across the country. These workshops help college students to learn about consumer credit and money management as well as how to make good financial decisions during college and in the future.
  • CHLI HSF Scholarship Fund -- CHLI has partnered with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) to provide promising undergraduate business majors of Hispanic and Portuguese descent with scholarships.
