Washington, D.C.-The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) hosted its 11thAnnual Gala & Leadership Awards on May 13, 2015 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C. This year CHLI celebrated its commitment to Latino youth and the launch of its CHLI Global Leaders Alumni Network.
CHLI honored exceptional leaders and institutions that have been involved with CHLI in the past, including, Senator, former President of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe Velez, former Governor of Florida, Jeb Bush, and Florida International University, as it celebrates its 50thanniversary.
"Our gala was all about the future: Alvaro Uribe, inspiring the leaders of tomorrow; Jeb Bush mentoring the leaders of tomorrow; and Florida International University, forming the leaders of tomorrow. At CHLI we seek to help form future generations of leaders, in the hope that they will respect the basic principles and tenets of the law, and respect themselves," said CHLI Chairman, former member of Congress, Lincoln Diaz-Balart.

The 2015 CHLI Leadership in International Relations Award was presented to Senator, former President of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe Velez. Mr. Uribe served as president of Colombia from 2002 to 2010. During his presidency, he brought peace and prosperity to his country. His distinguished career, changing the lives of many in Colombia, and his encouragement of the country's youth developed great admiration for him throughout the world. The award was presented by CHLI Vice-Chairmen, Congressman Henry Cuellar and Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart.
"It was an honor to present former President of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe Velez, with the CHLI 2015 Leadership in International Relations Award at the Annual Gala & Leadership Awards last week with my friend Mario Diaz-Balart," CHLI Vice-Chairman, Congressman Henry Cuellar said. "Thanks to CHLI for bringing everyone together to recognize outstanding leaders in our community who support the advancement of the Hispanic community."

CHLI honored Jeb Bush, the former Governor of Florida, with the 2015 CHLI Leadership in Public Service Award. Governor Jeb Bush is committed to Hispanic youth and is passionate about improving the quality of education for all students. Jeb Bush requested his son, Jeb Bush, Jr. be there to receive the honor. The award was presented by CHLI Chairman, former member of Congress, Lincoln Diaz-Balart and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Jeb Bush Jr's attendance and youthful spirit resonated the evening's ongoing theme.
"Governor Jeb Bush made a significant impact on Florida's education system. He has transformed the lives of thousands of Floridians by giving them an opportunity at the American dream. Because of his leadership, our students are better prepared to be tomorrow's leaders. On behalf of CHLI, I congratulate him on receiving the 2015 Leadership in Public Service Award," said CHLI Vice-Chairman, Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart.

A special recognition was presented to Florida International University (FIU), Miami's public research university, on its 50thanniversary, for its continued collaboration and support of CHLI's programs. The institution was honored with the "Maestro Award," presented by CHLI Executive Director, Mary Ann Gomez, CHLI Board Members, Congressman Carlos Curbelo and Juan Otero fromComcast | NBCUniversal | Telemundo. There to receive the award on FIU's behalf was Provost, Dr. Kenneth G. Furton and Law School Dean, Alexander Acosta.
"Congratulations FIU on receiving this special honor. I am honored to be a part of an organization that works together with growing institutions to further develop and provide internship opportunities to our country's youth," said CHLI Board Member, Congressman Carlos Curbelo.
